HISTORY CAFE

For 3000 years, ocean-goers from Greece, Rome, China, Arabia, Portugal, Holland & Britain have visited Kerala, adding their recipes to the melting-pot that is Kerala's cuisine. The River Periyar is Kerala’s source for not just water, power and inspiration, but is also rich in river catch. At the site of the Château, the river is just a few km from sea, mingling with backwater canals and lagoons, forming an estuary rich in Prawn, Pearl Spot, Snapper, Mullet, Baramundi, Clam etc.

PEARL SPOT
Native to the River Periyar estuary, the iconic Pearl Spot (Karimeeen) is a local delicacy and the official State Fish. Look out for fishermen wild-fishing Karimeen using the valathoti (dip net), the veesuvala (casting net), the ambu (spear fishing) and the vattavala (circular net). Best enjoyed as Pollichathu (flamed).

RIVER PRAWN
Kerala's estuaries and backwaters are abundant in Prawn which are wild-caught using the koruvala (trawl net), the veesuvala (casting net) and the cheenavala (Chinese net). You can see fishermen employing these methods in the river here. Best enjoyed as Kerala Prawn Curry.

The universal favourite "Neymeen" or King Fish (King Mackarel) are fast swimmers mainly caught using hooks and lines and they fight vigorously when caught. Best enjoyed fried or grilled.

SQUID
In Kerala, the most common type of squid found is the Indian squid. It is also known as "koonthal" locally. Squid Roast is a popular dry or semi-dry preparation cooked with aromatic spices, onions, tomatoes, ginger, garlic, and curry leaves.

Red Snapper also known as Chemballi in Malayalam is fished throughout the year. It has low calorie content and is rich in protein. We like it best grilled.

MACKAREL
The Indian mackerel is found in warm shallow waters along the coasts of the Indian ocean, especially in coastal bays, harbours and deep lagoons. A staple for Keralites, it is tasty as well as highly nutritional. Best enjoyed fried in Kerala style.

RIVER CLAM
The river bed right in front of our property is one of the most popular black clam picking spots in the region, with clam pickers from far and wide harvesting them by the boatload. Clam meat, known as kakka irachi is rich in calcium and is absolutely lip smacking when roasted with Kerala spices, coconut shavings and curry leaves.
